TOEFL iBT time management: pacing each section of the 2026 test
In the 2026 TOEFL iBT, time pressure comes from many short tasks rather than a few long ones. Move quickly through Complete the Words and Build a Sentence, but don't rush Module 1 of Reading and Listening, because it decides your route. In Writing, spend about 7 minutes on the email and 10 on the discussion post, leaving a minute to check each. In Speaking there is no preparation time, so start every answer immediately.
The new TOEFL is shorter, but it doesn't feel slow. Each section is a sequence of short timed tasks, and losing a minute early can mean rushing later. Here's how to pace each part.
Reading (about 30 minutes)
- Complete the Words: fast. Read each sentence once, type, check spelling, move on. Don't spend more than a few seconds stuck on one word. Leave it and come back if time allows.
- Read in Daily Life: read the question first, then scan the text. Two minutes or so per short text with its questions.
- Academic passage: read the whole passage once (it's short), then answer. Most of your Reading time goes here.
- Module 1: take care. Mistakes here can put you on the easier route. See how the adaptive test works.
Watch the timer on screen. If you're behind, guess the remaining items in the current set and move on, rather than leaving blanks when the module ends.
Listening (about 29 minutes)
Each audio plays once and the timing is mostly controlled by the test. Your job is to answer promptly:
- Choose an answer within a few seconds of the audio ending. Your first impression after listening is often right.
- Don't go back to a previous question in your head. It costs you the next one.
- Short notes only for academic talks.
Writing (about 23 minutes)
| Task | Time | Pacing |
|---|---|---|
| Build a Sentence | about 6 minutes for the set | Under a minute per item |
| Write an Email | about 7 minutes | 1 min read and plan, 5 min write, 1 min check |
| Academic Discussion | about 10 minutes | 2 min read and plan, 6–7 min write, 1–2 min check |
If you finish a task early, use the remaining time to check it again.

Start free practiceSpeaking (about 8 minutes)
- Listen and Repeat: start speaking straight after the sentence ends.
- Take an Interview: 45 seconds per answer, no preparation. Start with a direct answer, then add a reason and an example. A short closing sentence when you see about 5 seconds left is ideal.
Training your pace
- Practise with a timer always, even on single tasks. The new test rewards fast, accurate responses that only come from timed practice.
- Do full sections, not just individual tasks, so you learn how the time feels across a whole module.
- Track where you run out of time. If it's always the academic passage, practise reading academic texts faster; if it's the discussion post, practise planning in two minutes.
