12 common TOEFL iBT mistakes (2026 format) and how to avoid them

By the AIL teaching team, Melbourne · Updated 4 November 2026 · 3 min read
Short answer

The TOEFL mistakes that cost the most points in 2026 are preparing with old-format material, rushing Module 1 of Reading and Listening, spelling errors in Complete the Words, question word order in Build a Sentence, missing one of the three points in the email, repeating a classmate's idea in the discussion post, and short or hesitant answers in the interview. For Australian visas, forgetting to register as "Taking TOEFL for Australia" can invalidate the result entirely.

These are the mistakes we see most often in practice tests at AIL. Most are habits, not gaps in English, which means they can be fixed in a few weeks.

Before the test

1. Practising the old format. Most pre-2026 TOEFL material tests tasks that no longer exist. Use 2026-format practice. See the new TOEFL format.

2. Registering incorrectly for Australia. If you need the result for an Australian visa, you must select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" and sit the test at a test centre. See TOEFL for Australia.

Reading

3. Rushing Module 1. Module 1 decides whether you reach the harder module, and only the harder module gives access to the top scores. Accuracy first.

4. Spelling in Complete the Words. The right word with one wrong letter is wrong. Practise spelling academic words from memory.

5. Choosing options that repeat words from the text. In Daily Life and academic passages, the right answer usually paraphrases. Matching words is a trap.

Listening

6. Answering the words, not the intention, in Choose a Response. "Do you mind if I sit here?" is answered by "Not at all, go ahead", not by anything about minding.

Writing

7. Question word order in Build a Sentence. "Do you know where is the library?" is wrong; "Do you know where the library is?" is right. Indirect questions use statement word order.

8. Missing a point in the email. All three points in the task must be covered. Missing one lowers the score however good the language is.

9. Repeating a classmate in the discussion post. You need your own idea, with a specific example. "I agree with Maya because free transport is good" adds nothing new. Check a post with our free Academic Discussion checker.

10. Writing too little. Discussion posts under about 80 words rarely score above 3. Aim for 100–140.

Speaking

11. Paraphrasing in Listen and Repeat. Say exactly what you heard, including small words like "the", "have" and "should".

12. Short or hesitant interview answers. A 15-second answer can't show enough. Use the structure: direct answer, reason, example, close. See Take an Interview.

How to find your own top three

Take a full practice test and list every lost point by task. Most people find three habits cover more than half of their lost points. Fix those three before anything else, then take another test to check.

What is the most common TOEFL mistake?

Preparing with old-format material. Since January 2026, most task types have changed, so old practice tests prepare you for tasks that no longer exist.

Yes, especially in Complete the Words, where a misspelled word is marked wrong. Spelling also affects Writing scores.

How long should my TOEFL discussion post be?

At least 100 words, ideally 110–140.

What happens if I register for the TOEFL without selecting the Australia option?

For Australian visa purposes, Home Affairs says results not registered under "Taking TOEFL for Australia" are not eligible.
