TOEFL Listening in 2026: the four task types and how to approach each

By the AIL teaching team, Melbourne · Updated 4 November 2026 · 3 min read
Short answer

TOEFL Listening (about 29 minutes, adaptive) has four task types. In Listen and Choose a Response you hear one line and pick the best reply. Then there are short conversations, announcements and academic talks, each with multiple-choice questions. Each audio plays once. Focus on the speaker's purpose and attitude as well as the facts, take brief notes for the longer recordings, and answer every question before moving on.

Listening in the new TOEFL is shorter and faster than before. Instead of a few long lectures, you hear many short recordings. Concentration still matters, but the challenge is now switching quickly between different situations.

Listen and Choose a Response

You hear one sentence, such as a question, a request or a comment, and choose the most natural reply from the options.

You hear: "Do you mind if I borrow your notes from Tuesday's lecture?"

  • A. Yes, it was on Tuesday.
  • B. Sure, I'll bring them tomorrow. ✔
  • C. I didn't mind the lecture.

This tests whether you understand what the speaker wants, not just the words. Watch for options that repeat a word you heard ("Tuesday", "mind") but don't respond to the speaker's intention.

Common functions: requests, offers, invitations, suggestions, complaints, and indirect questions like "I was wondering if…".

Listen to a Conversation

Short conversations, usually two people, on campus or in everyday situations: a student and an advisor, two classmates planning a project, a customer and a service desk.

Questions ask about:

  • The main problem or purpose of the conversation.
  • Details, such as times, places and requirements.
  • What a speaker will probably do next.
  • A speaker's attitude or opinion.

Listen for the problem early on, and for the decision at the end.

Listen to an Announcement

A short announcement, for example from a professor at the start of class, a library, or a campus office. Questions focus on what is changing, who it affects and what listeners need to do.

Listen especially for changes ("instead", "has been moved", "no longer") and instructions ("make sure you", "you'll need to", "by Friday").

Listen to an Academic Talk

A short lecture or talk on an academic subject. Questions cover the main idea, key details, how examples support a point, and the speaker's attitude.

Signposts help you follow the structure:

  • Topic: "Today I want to look at…"
  • Example: "Take, for instance…", "A good case is…"
  • Contrast: "However…", "But here's the interesting part…"
  • Importance: "The key point is…", "What really matters here is…"

Notes: brief and only for longer audio

For Choose a Response, don't take notes, just listen. For talks, a few key words help: the topic, two or three main points and any examples. Writing full sentences makes you miss the next point.

Attitude and purpose questions

Many wrong answers come from questions about why someone said something or how they feel. Tone matters: "Well, I suppose that could work…" is not enthusiastic agreement. Practise listening to how something is said, not only what.

How to practise

  • Short daily listening across many situations: campus podcasts, university YouTube channels, radio interviews.
  • Shadowing: repeat short sections aloud right after the speaker. It trains your ear for natural speed and helps with the Speaking section too.
  • Full adaptive practice to build concentration across both modules.

In the AIL practice tests

The AIL TOEFL iBT style practice tests include all four Listening task types in the 2026 format, with Australian, British and American voices, and adaptive routing between Module 1 and Module 2. Each recording plays once, as in the real test.
