A 4-week TOEFL iBT study plan for the 2026 format
A good four-week TOEFL plan for the 2026 format uses about an hour a day. Start with a full practice test to find your weakest section, spend half your time on it, and practise the new short tasks daily (Complete the Words, Build a Sentence, Listen and Repeat), because they reward accuracy that only comes from regular practice. Take a full adaptive practice test every weekend and review every mistake.
The 2026 TOEFL is made of many short tasks. That's good news for preparation: short tasks can be practised every day in small blocks, and they improve quickly with repetition.
This plan assumes about an hour on weekdays and two hours at the weekend.
Before you start: one full practice test
Take a full 2026-format test, under time, in one sitting. Write down:
- Your 1–6 score in each section.
- Whether you reached the harder second module in Reading and Listening.
- Your scores for the email, discussion post and interview answers.
Your focus section is the one furthest below your target.
Daily "short task" block (15–20 minutes, every day)
These tasks reward accuracy and automatic responses, which come from daily repetition:
- Complete the Words: two paragraphs. Check spelling and word endings.
- Build a Sentence: five sentences. Note any grammar pattern you get wrong.
- Listen and Repeat: five sentences, recorded and compared.
Week 1: diagnose and learn the tasks
| Day | Main block (40 minutes) |
|---|---|
| Mon | Review the practice test. Start an error list by task type. |
| Tue | Reading: Read in Daily Life and academic passage practice. |
| Wed | Listening: Choose a Response and conversations. |
| Thu | Writing: one email (7 min) and one discussion post (10 min). |
| Fri | Speaking: interview answers, four questions, recorded. |
| Weekend | Focus section: a full timed section and careful review. |

Spend half of each main block on your focus section. Keep the daily short-task block.
- Reading focus: more academic passages, plus 15 minutes a day of academic reading for vocabulary.
- Listening focus: academic talks, with short notes on the main idea and examples.
- Writing focus: an email or discussion post every day, then check it against your error list.
- Speaking focus: four interview answers a day; listen back for pauses and repeated words.
Weekend: second full practice test. Did you reach the harder module? Did your focus section move?
Week 3: output under time
- Write one email and one discussion post every other day, in exam time.
- Record four interview answers every day.
- Do one adaptive Reading or Listening section every two days.
Weekend: third full practice test.
Week 4: test conditions
- Mon–Wed: full timed sections, mostly in your focus section.
- Thu: one full test, or Reading and Listening back to back.
- Fri: review your error list. Light short-task practice only.
- Day before: rest, check your ID, registration and test centre details.
Signs it's working

Is four weeks enough to prepare for the TOEFL?
Four weeks is enough to learn the 2026 format and improve one or two sections noticeably if you practise daily. Larger improvements in overall English take longer.
How many hours a day should I study for the TOEFL?
About an hour a day of focused practice is effective. Short daily practice suits the new task types better than long weekly sessions.
Should I use old TOEFL books?
Only for general reading and listening practice and the Academic Discussion task. Most other tasks changed in January 2026.
How many practice tests should I take?
One at the start and one each weekend is a good rhythm, with careful review after each.
